This is actually the story of the infamous nineteenth-century Scottish grave robbers who weren’t Scottish and didn’t rob graves. They were in fact Irish, and as robbing graves to provide the requirements of Edinburgh’s anatomists became rather hard work, they just required to murdering people-usually their neighbors-for profit. In collaboration using their common-law wives, they set about providing corpses for Dr. John Knox, an eminent Scottish doctor, with considerable passion and gusto. The play follows their business exploits from small origins, through their days of peak output, and on to the last reckoning-set against a world that is getting recognizably modern.
