Desperate to find someone to unite the battling interests of General Douglas MacArthur, Admiral Chester Nimitz, and OSS Chief “Wild Expenses” Donovan, Leader Franklin D. Roosevelt places Fleming Pickering responsible for the OSS’s Pacific functions. Immediately, two urgent missions get into his lap: to get hold of and recovery a music group of former American servicemen and their dependents away from home from the Japanese in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia; and at exactly the same time, to create a weather train station in the Gobi to greatly help direct planned aerial episodes against Japan. Pickering includes a free hand to use whomever he pleases, and he’s soon surrounded by many of the Marines on whom he has arrive to rely through the war: guys like Ken McCoy, Ed Banning, Jake Dillon, Ernie Zimmerman, and – much to his surprise – a certain hotshot pilot called Malcolm Pickering, his child.
