Summary:

Hugh Collier in “The Danger Fan” feels he’s living a clear life as a little more than skilled bank worker in the city of Stanton. He chooses to keep behind a lifestyle that for him was a “caricature and savage cartoon of the beautiful truth that existence could be,” and he heads into the mountains by itself, carrying only the requirements on his equine. Despite the fact that his efforts at hunting and fishing end up being failures in the early days, he helps to keep his spirits up by celebrating his small successes as he about Magic Gun: A Traditional western Duo moves deeper in the open. Two things switch the span of his adventure: he sees a city from a hill, and a stranger, desperate to file on the claim, convinces Collier to trade horses. Once he walks the stranger’s equine into the city, he soon finds himself to be mistaken for the outlaw Expenses Gadsden by both worshipers from the outlaw and the person after the outlaw, Lassiter.

In the title story, twenty-two year old Lewis Dikkon has led a sheltered life, functioning seven days a week as a shoemaker for his taskmaster uncle, Charles Bender. Being inside more often than not, he knows little of the city and its own inhabitants plus they have no desire for him, other than as a poorly dressed oddball. A stranger called Sam Prentiss starts showing up at 8 p.m. every Saturday night to sit in a chair in the shop’s doorway and appearance across the street for an hour. Their discussions, though limited, start to create Dikkon’s mind to function and before long he chooses he wants to buy a gun. When Dan Hodge, the gunman, can be wiped out and his personal items go up for auction, Dikkon gets his Colt, which he is convinced is definitely a magic gun.
