Since Victoria Woodhull launched her symbolic bet for the presidency in 1872, dozens of females have sought the presidency within the last 150 years. Their mission began long before women gained the vote and it unfolded over decades when a woman’s quest for any higher political office was met with prejudice, mockery, and hostility. Even after females began voting in 1920, they continued to be shut-out of areas where presidential candidacies had been often created. Whether a female will break through the cup ceiling through the current election cycle is uncertain, Fitzpatrick acknowledges. Nonetheless it will happen ultimately.
