In 1788 the initial band of pioneers lay out from New Britain for the Northwest Place under the management of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what’s now Marietta around the banks from the Ohio River.

McCullough tells the story through five main personas: Cutler and Putnam; Cutler’s kid Ephraim; and two additional men, one a carpenter flipped architect, and the other your physician who became a prominent pioneer in American science. They and their own families created a town within a primeval wilderness, while coping with such frontier realities as floods, fires, wolves and bears, no streets or bridges, no guarantees of any sort, all the while negotiating a contentious and occasionally hostile relationship using the native people. Like so a lot of McCullough’s subjects, they allow no obstacle deter or defeat them.
